In november 2024 the hq together with NIKI Hanover Residency invited Martin Howse, to spent some time at ruine hq and work on another research:

earthcode/ergot proposed an open laboratory and small library focusing on the culturing of the parasitic Claviceps Purpurea (ergot) fungus, its rich history and mythology and a speculative connection to contemporary software and logical infrastructural structures. During the short residency a working sketch was implemented for the potential interactions of cultured ergot and the elements of an earth computer, allowing the earth to manipulate, code and store computational or logical structures. A small publication also was produced, documenting ergot and associated research. The audience was invited to witness and join parts of the readings/masquerade/ offering-invocation-research process, and potentially to contribute to the publication.

earthcode/ergot extends the artist's previous research on projects such as
Sketches for an earth computer, and Tiny Mining, a mineral exploration co-operative and community committed to the open source exploitation of the interior of the human body for rare earth and other mineral resources.

Towards the construction of a series of ergot incubators and prototype ruined/brutalist grain/ergot storage architectures, alongside the specification of an ergot network protocol and server architecture which runs across these incubation platforms. Examining intertwined “life/death” cycles of ergot, human grain storage and bread making, physiology of ergot poisoning and dosage, and storage/server technologies.
